On
December 2, 2021, the South Korean government approved the Regional
Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP), and RCEP will
formally enter into force for South Korea on February 1, 2022.
RCEP
is a multilateral trade agreement involving 10 ASEAN countries and 15
countries including China, South Korea, Australia, Japan and New
Zealand, covering 1/3 of the world's GDP, population and trade scale.South Korea's exports to RCEP members account for half of its total exports.With
the entry into force of RCEP in South Korea, South Korea and Japan will
establish a bilateral free trade relationship for the first time.
So
far, RCEP has been approved by China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand,
Cambodia, Brunei, New Zealand, Australia, Laos, Vietnam and South Korea.The countries that have not yet been
approved are Malaysia, the Philippines, Myanmar and Indonesia, all of
which belong to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
