Recently, a typical outbreak of mad cow disease has been reported in the UK. In
an effort to prevent mad cow disease from spreading into China, Chinese
customs have banned the import of eviscerated beef under the age of 30
months from September 29.
The export of British beef to China can be described as "ill-fated". Since
the 1990s, due to the outbreak of mad cow disease in Britain, the
European Union has taken the lead in issuing a ban on the import of
British beef, which has dealt a heavy blow to the British animal
husbandry industry. Of course, China also stopped importing British beef at that time.
At
the end of 2019, China and Britain reached an agreement that British
beef would enter the Chinese market again nearly 30 years later. The
first batch of frozen boneless beef under the age of 30 months and
frozen unrefined bovine fat from four enterprises were licensed to be
exported to China. At the time, the
industry estimated that the deal could generate a value of 230 million
pounds for British beef producers in the first five years.
Then,
in the following year, in July and November 2020, two UK slaughtering
and carving plants independently suspended the export of their products
to China. The other two companies are
refrigerated factories, which means that since November last year,
British beef has been virtually unable to enter the Chinese market
through customs channels.
To sum up, the ban has no impact on China's beef imports as a whole.
