With the preferential tariff treatment under the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), Vietnam's fruits and vegetables have a promising future in expanding their market share in the EU, the world's largest market.
Benefit from the tariff reduction policy
With the entry into force of the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), fruits and vegetables and seasonings are the first to enjoy preferential tariff treatment, with 94% of the 547 tariff lines in the category of fresh and processed fruits and vegetables having zero tariff, including many fruits and vegetables that are Vietnam's export advantage, which has also become a competitive advantage for Vietnam.
According to the General Department of Customs, in 2021, the value of exports of fruits and vegetables to the European market grew at a higher rate of $303 million, up 17.4 percent year-on-year. Especially after the necessity to implement blockade and quarantine measures due to the outbreak of New Crown Pneumonia, the demand for food, especially fruits and vegetables, has further increased in EU countries, with an average annual growth of 15-20% for fresh fruits and vegetables and more than 30% for processed products.
However, various experts believe that the market share of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables in the EU is low, accounting for less than 1% of the European market demand. According to Hoang Quang Phong, Vice Chairman of Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the reasons include unbalanced product structure, low economic efficiency, unstable product quality and output, and Vietnamese enterprises' fruits and vegetables and seasonings face technical standard barriers, making it difficult to enter the European market.
Provide in-depth technical support for enterprises
To help Vietnamese enterprises strengthen their market share in the European market, the EU Delegation in Vietnam, through Oxfam Vietnam and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), has developed a project on "Strengthening the export capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises in seasoning, fruits and vegetables". The project, which will run from 2022 to 2023, aims to expand export volumes to the EU market.
The project provides in-depth technical support to enterprises on quality management, supply chain management and market development for export to the EU market. At the same time, it opens up opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises to connect with potential customers in Europe.
In particular, the program will help companies comply with and obtain certificates that meet European food safety standards such as the International Food Standards (IFS), BRC Global Food Safety, and Fairtrade certification. It will also provide marketing events, market development, market information and matchmaking for companies with potential partners in the European market.
