Uruguay slaughtered more than 200,000 head of cattle in May for the 13th consecutive month, the U.S. newspaper El Observador reported on May 27. If the data is true, the past 12 months will be a record of more than 2.75 million head of slaughter. Although the slaughter volume dropped slightly last week to 56,745 head, it was still significant. Chinese beef import prices have declined in recent weeks, with prices down 3-5% last month, but demand remains. The average price per ton of exported beef exceeded $5,400 for the first time in 30 days. It was $5,337 for the week ending May 21, slightly lower than the previous week. This compares to an annual average of $5,059 as of last week, up 30 percent year-over-year. In addition, lamb exports fell 21 percent, but prices remained firm, averaging $5,170 per ton as of late May, compared with $4,746 last year.
