According to Konkurent.ru, the Russian government is moving to allocate 150,000 tons of the Bering Sea pollock Total Allowable Catch (TAC) previously reserved for U.S. fishing vessels to Russian fishing vessels.
According to the report, the TAC will come from the Western Bering Sea and the Chukchi Basin in Russia's Far East. The newspaper says that the Russian Western Bering Sea will increase by 149,300 tons to 559,000 tons and the Chukchi Basin by 2,000 tons to 7,000 tons.
"The historical maximum in the Bering Sea reached 852,000 tons in the 1990s," the article quoted Alexey Baitalyuk, head of the VNIRO Pacific division of the Russian Federal Institute of Fisheries, as saying. "This is practically the same as the amount of pollock caught by fishermen in the Sea of Okhotsk every year. Since the 2000s, the maximum catch in the Western Bering Sea region was 567,800 tons (2017). the annual average word catch by fishing vessels in 2019-2020 is the highest level for large fishing vessels in the Bering Sea pollock fishery during the observation period since 1998. in 2020, the single catch by large fishing vessels was 91.5 tons.
