According to Malaysian media reports, Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Datuk Seri Ahmad Hamzah said that Malaysia's pineapple exports rose from RM642 million (about RMB 974 million) in 2020 to RM1.1 billion (about RMB 1.669 billion) in 2021, a figure that has surpassed Malaysia's 12th Five-Year Plan (12MP, ending 2025) target of RM1 billion. Exports of pineapple-related goods are on an upward trend between 2016 and 2021, including various pineapple-based products such as fresh pineapples, canned pineapples and goods from the pineapple industry.
China and Malaysia signed the Protocol on the Export of Malaysian Pineapples to China back in 2015, and in 2017 Malaysian pineapples began to be shipped to China by air and sea, with a total import of 122 tons for the year. Malaysian pineapple exports to China then reached a peak of 443 tons in 2019 and began to rebound last year after experiencing a significant decline during the epidemic. The Chinese market has a huge consumption of pineapples, with customs data showing that China imports about 200,000 tons of pineapples per year, basically as fresh fruit. Nearly 70% of these pineapples come from the Philippines, and 20% from Taiwan. Since March last year, the import of pineapples from Taiwan to the mainland has been suspended, while the market demand for imported pineapples continues to increase.
Malaysia's Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry said that the demand for Malaysian pineapples from China and the Middle East has increased, especially for MD2 varieties and local varieties such as N36 and Josapine. According to the report, Singapore is the largest importer of Malaysian pineapple products, accounting for 66% of the market share. And China is a very potential export destination, especially for the MD2 variety of premium fresh pineapples.
He also said that Germany also has a strong import demand for Malaysian pineapples. However, this demand cannot be met due to various factors such as limited production and the need to follow special norms such as global GAP certification.
In 2021, Malaysia's registered pineapple production is about 525,097 tons on 11,760 hectares of planted area, but of the total planted area, only 30% can be exported and 70% is used to meet local demand.
