In China, Russian wine is only a novelty in beverages for the time being. However, according to the latest report of the Russian Satellite News Agency, the Russian Agricultural Bank announced that China has become the second largest country in the consumption of Russian wine. From Jan. to Aug. 2021, Russian wine exports to China accounted for 11% of its total wine exports. The Agricultural Bank of Russia predicts that the export volume of Russian wine is expected to reach US $13 million in 2021, a y/y increase of ca. 30%. In contrast, in the previous 5 years (2016-2020), the average growth of Russian wine exports was only 1%, and the annual wine exports were about US$10 million.

Russia has greatly expanded the area of grape cultivation in 2018. In that year, the area of grape cultivation was 5,000 hectares in Russia, and in 2019 it was close to 7,000 hectares, an increase of 40% y/y. In June 2020, Russia officially promulgated the "Viticulture and Wine-making Law" to increase support for related industries and actively expand overseas markets. According to Russia's plan, by 2025, the country's grape growing area will increase to 30,000 hectares. As a major wine consumer, China is one of the markets Russia wants to open up. The Russian industry believes that China is the most powerful market and one of the most promising markets for Russian wine producers.

The main destination of Russian wine exports is Ukraine, but due to many factors, the proportion of Russian wine exports to Ukraine will be reduced from 51% to 42% from Jan. to Aug. 2021. In the past two years, Australia, which is rich in wine, has been at a disadvantage to China's wine exports. For Russia, it is a good opportunity to capture the Chinese market shares in wine consumption.
