China and Russia have
agreed on supply terms for Russian beef which could help simplify trade
between the two countries, the Russian agriculture safety watchdog said
on Tuesday.
The Russian watchdog and China’s customs
administration signed a protocol on terms for checks, quarantine and
requirements for veterinary certificates for Russian beef.
Just
in 2020 China opened its market to Russian beef. In May 2020, the first
batch of Russian beef officially entered China. Compared with Brazil,
US, New Zealand, Uruguay, Argentina and other countries, supplies of
beef from Russia to China are small, with only two Russian producers at
present allowed by China’s Customs authority to supply their product.
However, the amount of beef exported from Russia to China has been
showing a significant upward trend.
According to a research
report published by the Agricultural Products Export Development Center
of the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, in the first 8 months this year,
Russia exported 13,100 tons of beef to China, which is more than three
times that of the same period last year (4,200 tons). The Chinese
market’s share of total Russian beef exports increased by 16% to 64%.
Brazil,
the world’s largest beef exporter, suspended beef exports to its No. 1
customer China after confirming two cases of “atypical” mad cow disease
in two separate domestic meat plants earlier this month, which would be a
good opportunity for emerging beef exporting countries to occupy market
shares in China.
